Dental services covered by CDBS include:
- Dental Examinations
- X-rays
- Professional Cleaning
- Fissure Sealants

The CDBS does not cover orthodontic, cosmetic dental work, or dental services provided in the hospital.
At Port Macquarie Dental Centre, we provide paediatric dentistry services, including pain-free dentistry, fissure sealants, and habit-breaking appliances.
Who is eligible for Child Dental Benefits Scheme?
A child’s eligibility is determined at the start of each year and lasts the entire year.
A child is qualified if they are:
- aged between 2-17 years at least one day of the calendar year
- qualified for Medicare part of a family receiving Family Tax Benefit Part-A, or
-
receiving one of the following Australian Government Payments:
- Youth Allowance
- ABSTUDY Allowance
- Disability Support Pension
- Parenting Payment
- Special Benefit
- Carer Payment
- Double Orphan Pension
How would I check if my child is qualified for CDBS?
You don’t need to apply or register for CDBS. If your child is eligible, Medicare sends you a letter.
To verify your child’s eligibility, access your Medicare online account at my.gov.au or call the Medicare general enquiries hotline on 132 011.
What if my child is not eligible for the CDBS?
Your child will still be able to join the GuS (Grow Up Smiling) program at no out-of-pocket expense to the school or parents – as long as you submit all required information and records to their teacher by the school’s deadline.
How do I make use of the $1,026 benefit?
You may take advantage of the capped benefit of $1,026 to pay for your child’s basic dental services for two years.
If the funds are not fully used up within the first year, you can still use them in the second year if your child is still in the program. After the second year, any existing balance will not be carried forward.
Will I have to pay out-of-pocket expenses?
As long as the amount of your balance can cover the fees for the appointment, you don’t need to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. Your claim will be bulk-billed via Medicare, so no patient co-payment is needed.
The Importance of Paediatric Dentistry
Children require proper dental care as much as adults do. They are more prone to dental emergencies and several dental problems that can have life-long effects.
Our dental team in Port Macquarie detects dental issues early and prevents them from progressing. This early diagnosis helps parents track their children’s health status. Underlying dental issues may cause more serious general health problems if ignored.
Port Macquarie Dental Centre is dedicated to educating children about the importance of dental health. It’s important that they learn to practice oral hygiene as early as one year old.
